The base isolation technique is an effective method to withstand the earthquake for building structures. However, the advanced technique is mainly applied to multi-story buildings for a long time due to the following reasons: firstly, the isolators in high-rise buildings are prone to be in tension; secondly the effect of isolation may be relative slight. To cope with the difficulties in the base isolation design for high-rise buildings, we carry through a conceptual design and present the design method and design process.A number of representational structure models are created based on the FEA program-ETABS. After the analysis a series of design rules can be gained. The natural vibration period of the isolated structure should extend to a certain length. The height-width ratio must be limited to a certain value for different structure types to avoid the tension in the isolators. The upper structure arrangement will be modulated, including the story height, space breadth and the arrangement of the shear walls, and then we can find the sequence of the tension in the isolator. According to the sequence, when the tension produces latest or slightest, the arrangement is optimal. This paper also presents the calculation of parameters of the isolator and damper, and then point out how to evaluate relevant parameters in ETABS. When we utilize the parameters to arrange the isolators and dampers, we mainly take torsion response due to eccentricity into account. The isolators mustn't yield under strong wind. A practicality design method for isolators and dampers is generalized at last.Through the conclusions gained from conceptual design above, this paper suggest a design process which is applicable to the isolated high-rise buildings and draft the process chart. In the light of this process, two practical isolated high-rise buildings, including frame-shear wall structure and frame-core wall structure are designed to demonstrate that the process is effective. The analysis results indicate that the seismic fortification intensity of isolated structures can be minus 1 degree, and the other performance request also can be met.
