China's coal production and consumption is large. Battery locomotive is used widely as a hauling transport in our country's coal mine production, and the battery also obtains the widespread application as the locomotive power source. It is especially important that how can charge and discharge fast, safely and highly effective. However coal mine use mostly the traditional charger in our country. The traditional charger's volume is big, charging time is long; also battery life is seriously influenced. They don't equate with the environmental and frugal society with what are advocated in our country. Therefore, it has good reality significance that charging device of lead-acid battery which can charge fast is developed.On the basis of battery charger principle and each kind of charge method study in the present, the article proposed the advanced variable current charging method. In the initial stage of charging, big current is used to charge as far as possible more electric quantity in the short time, when the limiting voltage is achieved and it is in the time limiting, it will transfer to charge in the next stage, then piecewise decline charging current, make charging current approach battery's acceptable charging curve generally and decrease battery's charging polarization voltage's influence. Both more electric quantities are charged in the shorter time and battery is protected well. Certainly in order to satisfy our country coal mine charging custom and the users level are considered, I also have designed two-stage charging, manual charging and initial charging and so on.In order to satisfy demand of charging method, the software and hardware system has been designed in the article. The main circuit has been composed of power input-rectifier-chopper transform- filter output; the chopper has used two IPM as power switch device and has completed to charge and depolarizatedly discharge in the battery. The control circuit has used TMS320LF2407 as control core and has designed related circuit. Through gathering the information of battery's terminal voltage, temperature and charging current, then the information has been fed in DSP to analysis and process, the corresponding control signal has been obtained, make-break of IPM has been controlled and finally intelligent-charging has been realized. The software system has used the modulation design method, is advantageous for the debugging, has designed the master routine, the charging method procedure, as well as some related subroutines, controller's control algorithm has used the digital PID computation.In order to improve charger's performance, twelve ton storage battery locomotives have been tested in the long time. Test results have showed that charging time has reduced the approximately 50% compared to the traditional charging way, the charging efficiency has been promoted near 90%. And temperature rise of battery electrolyte haven't increased obviously compared to conventional charging, high efficient and fast charging has been realized, and also battery has been protected well.
