Gorge-scape Public Space System--Urban Design Method In Mountain City Research

After decades of extensive development, the built area of mountain cities has rapidly expanded. However, because of the topography and economic conditions, there have been a number of urban issues that need to be addressed. These include imperfect transportation systems, high building density, poor architectural design, lack of public space, destruction of the ecological environment and so on. With the development of the economy and the improvement of the quality of life, the mountain cities have begun to usher in positive changes to the urban environment. More recently the focus has been on improving the existing environment rather than on rapid expansion. Municipal governments have begun to realize the importance of urban design to city development and have begun addressing some of the more pressing concerns.For solving more effectively the unique design issues that apply to mountain cities, including traffic, ventilation, specific environmental concems, disaster prevention, and historical prevention, and basing on the planning theory and practice of mountain city, a urban desing method have been promoted. The method is that the"Gorge-scape public space system"is created in the city, starting from the public space, to improving in various aspects of urban problems, to creating the city characteristics, finaly, to achieve the purpose of enhancing the quality of the citys.The Gorge-scape public space system is a kind of public system with spatial patterns of canyon-shaped, and it is also a ecological corridor of walk By the path, space, green space, construction of four elements by a similar "strip city" approach to build the ecological corridor of the walk designed with four basic elements: the path, the yard, green space, and the building. This design methodology will build on the concept of "the strip city".This paper will further argue that the Gorge-scape public space system has the potential to improve serveral city issue. The Gorge-scape public space system aims to achieve these improvements by highlighting and building upon the existing characteristics of the mountain city.For expatiating how to build a Gorge-scape public space system in the mountain city, the author, first, analyzes the design principles of Gorge-scape public space system from three aspects, design values, mountain features and functional requirements. Then, based on it, the overall planning principles and methods have been put out and introduced through the example of the Pengshui urban design program. Then the author proposes some detailed designs using four Gorge-scape elements. Finally, some suggestions and methods have been proposed for the implementation and management of the Gorge-scape public space system.The Gorge-scape public space system has the potential to be applied to mountain cities in a variety of geographical and cultural contexts.
