A new style seal used in the condition of high pressure, low speed and dry-friction, which is one of harsh working condition about mechanical seal is put forward. The mature theoretical basis and experimental data involved the seal are seldom investigated.A finite element model is established by method of integral contact using ANSYS. The end face displacement, contact deformation, end face stress and contact pressure are obtained when mating faces materials were WC vs WC and WC vs C. The effects of them on the seal performance are analyzed. The results show that the end faces is completely contact when mating face materials are WC vs C, the contact pressure and end face stress are relatively well-distributed. The end faces are partially contacted laterally when mating face materials were WC vs WC forming the contact zone and the opening gap. The pressure and stress are centralized in the contact zone.A test equipment for dry-friction mechanical seal is build to verify the analysis results by ANSYS. The structural parameters and operating parameters of the seal, for example load coefficient, medium pressure, rotate speed, are tested through the simulative experiment. The effects of the parameters on leakage rate of the seal are analyzed. The surface morphologies of the material are observed in order to analyze the wear mechanism of mating face materials. The results indicate that load coefficient had a rather large influence on the leakage rate. When load coefficient is decreased to a certain value, the seal shows unstable performance. WC vs C offers steady performance and long service life.In conclusion, WC vs C which provides perfect stabilization and premium over-all property are especially suitable for dry-friction mechanical seal.
