Solid propellant contains oxidant and incendiary agent. When caught fire, the combustion of solid propellant is very intense without oxygen. Currently, the fire fighting equipment used in the solid propellant industry can not effectively fight the fire of solid propellant. Once fire happened during in the production, processing, transportation and storage of solid propellant, it could not be controlled, so the security situation of solid propellant is extremely grim.In this paper, the fire extinguishing technology of the fire of solid propellant is researched. Firstly, by the analysis of the composition, combustion characteristics and mechanism of the solid propellant, the fire extinguishing methods of the solid propellant are brought forward; through the studied the connection between the theory of heating layer of solid propellant and the theory of hot ignition, a theoretical critical condition of the quenching of solid propellant was basically established.Secondly, through analysing the principles of the existing fire extinguishing agent, The suitable fire fighting extinguishing agent for the fire of solid propellant was selected-the Water Extinguishing Agent; by analysing of the existing automatic sprinkler technology, the defects and shortcomings for the fire of solid propellant were found out. On the basis of it, put forward the ideas and methods of the high-speed water jet technology.Finally, a fire extinguishing experiment platform of solid propellant was designed and built. A small sized combustion chamber was established with 1.4m (length)×1.0m (width)×1.2m (height), studied the fire extinguishing effect for the fire of solid propellant on different conditions through the testing methods of the thermocouple, thermal infrared imager, flue gas analyzer and dynamic collection system. Experimental results indicated that the choose of spray pressure and spray type play an important role in putting out the fire of solid propellant, proves the feasibility of high speed water jet technology, and accumulated the data for the establishment of a new generation fire extinguishing system for the fire of solid propellant.
