Gas fire extinguishing system has the characteristics of higher efficiency and environment friendship. Based on the requirement that more and more important places should be protected by gas fire extinguishing system, the thesis introduced the gas fire extinguishing agent and the development tendency as well as the application features of the gas fire extinguishing system. According to the gas fire extinguishing agents listed in ISO/CD/14520 Gaseous Fire Extinguishing System—Physical Properties and System Design as well as NFPA-2001 (2000) Code for Design of Clean Gas Fire Extinguishing System, and in the light of the requirements in the current national fire codes, the result that FM-200 fire extinguishing system is the best choice has been obtained based on further comparison of the fire extinguishing mechanism, fire extinguishing efficiency and the related engineering cost of various gas fire extinguishing agents. The thesis further analyzed the toxicity of the different gas fire extinguishing agents used in the important places in industrial buildings and civil buildings. It also analyzed the harmful impact of the product of the agent during the fire suppression on the occupants as well as the requirements the protecting elements must meet. Nowadays, halon fire extinguishing agent and its system has been prohibited at home and abroad. Based on the analysis of the characteristics of high pressure CO2 agent, FM-200, IG-541 and their corresponding fixed fire extinguishing systems and the design calculation of unit fire extinguishing system and combined distribution system, it came to the conclusion that the design amount of the fire extinguishing agent used in the system must be defined, or else, the safety of the people in the protected area will be affected seriously.In the light of a case study and based on the prices of the products manufactured by some main fire product manufacturers in China, the comparison was done among the products, the installation of the materials as well as the prices of the products according to the base price quota for the equipment installation budget and the engineering price ratio of the three gas fire extinguishing systems under different fire extinguishing patterns has been fixed. When one set of the equipment is used to protect eight (or less) areas, heptfluoride propane (FM-200) fire extinguishing system is the best choice; if one set of the equipment is used to protect four (or less) areas, the high pressure CO2 system has the lowest engineering cost. Ultra-large spaces and multi-protection areas should be protected by low pressure CO2 system. The data given in the thesis can be used for reference by some related units, and they also laid foundation for the formation and revision of the related codes and standards.
