From the development process of cosmopolitan, single-center model will easily lead to the mass functions of urban centers, traffic jams and so on.So cosmopolitans construct sub-centers,that is,change urban spatial patterns from the "single center" to "multi-center" to reduce pressure on urban centers.The formation mechanisms of urban sub-center include the spill-over of CBD function and urban sub-center of functional compensation, the government and the market mechanism, transportation and communications technology development, elements of diffusion and concentration mechanisms, city size and morphology-oriented mechanism and urban space self-organizing mechanism. The patterns of sub-citycenter are partition equilibrium sub-citycenter,transportation hub sub-citycenter, single sub-citycenter.Sub-citycenter grows from multiple nodes to ring node structure,and analyse the grow process of different sub-citycenterThe relationship between the rail transportation and sub-center is that the development of sub-center depends on large-capacity rapid rail transit, the rail transportation hub is base location of sub-center.Shanghai's sub-centers should increase numbers of rail transit, make full use of underground space, sub-centers develop well public transport link.More than ten years has been past since the implementation of The Overall Urban Planning Of Shanghai(1999-2020). This paper contrasts the plan and current situation of four sub-centers of Shanghai's Xujiahui, Wujiaochang, Huamu and Zhenru, describe their qualitative and quantitative characteristic and point out the questions based on the theories of multi-center, the successful experience of the construction of multi centers in Tokyo,Moscow,Paris and evaluate the plans of the four sub-centers. The author proposes that Shanghai's multi-center should increase the number of sub-center,Pudong Shanlin and the Pengpu Village area, Hongqiao integrated transport hub should be incorporated into multi-center system, and Wujiaochang, Huamu and Pudong Shanlin sub-center should increase the number of rail transit line.
