Face gear drive (FGD), which is a new type gear drive, has many unique advantages and geometric phenomenon. In recent years, the research on the application requirements has become the focus of research. The meshing of the orthogonal axis face gear (FG) with a standard in volute spur gear was mainly studied in the paper. The surfaces of the FG were built on the base of the FG geometry. Geometrical modeles of FG and pinion were generated then. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the FG bend stress and contact stress, which was based on the geometrical model of the FGD, was studied with the help of ANSYS.In the analysis of the process of building model, the FG and the pinion were research objects. The related geometric parameters of the FGD were chosed. The conditions of no-number cutting and non-pointing, which were based on differential geometries and theory of gearing, were analyzed. The surfaces models of the FG were formed, according to the simulation of shaping process and FG processing. Then the geometrical digital models of the FG system, which can be accepted by the FEA oftware, were generated. In the analysis of the Statics, the bend stresses and contact stresses of the FG system were investigated by finite element. By means of ANSYS, bend stress contours were obtained after setting attributes, meshing, loading and caculating. Then, the influence of different force locations was compared in the research of the bend stresses. The disciplines of bend stress distribution were indicated. The bending strength was checked according to the theory of strength. In the contact investigation, the traditional calculation method of processing gear contacting problems, which based on the Hertz theory, was introduced. The range of the contact stress of FG system was obtained applying the finite element method. The FE calculation results coincide with the traditional calculation results. The contact strength was checked according to the theory of strength.
