Gear drive is the most fundamental in mechanical drives. Face gear(FG) drive has many unique advantages as a new type gear drive, especially in high-power and high-speed applications. This paper studies the generation of tooth profile of orthogonal-shaft FG, the simulation of FG's tooth profile with helical pinion, the modeling of the FG, the analysis of bend stress of the FG drive.The research on the generation of tooth profile of FG is made up of the derivation of the equations of FG tooth, and of the visualization of FG tooth surface and fillet surface. The limiting equations of undercutting and pointing of FG is derived on the base of the velocity in processing and FG geometry, and the limitation of FG tooth width is gained. Two new types of planetary gear drives with face-gear is discussed. The gear ratio and the drive efficiency are analyzed.Two methods of generating shapers are put forward. One is based on application of a screw involute surface. The other is based on a heliciod surface enveloped by a rack-cutter. The tooth equation of face-gear with helical pinion is derived and the limitation of tooth width of the face-gear is discussed. The visualization of the tooth surface of face-gear is realized. The face-gear with helical pinion is modeled by Pro/E.The research of the bend stress of FG drive is made by the use of Finite element analysis(FEA).The influence of the force location and helix angle on the bend stresses of pinion and face-gear is discussed.
