Gear drive is the most fundamental in mechanical drives. Face gear(FG) drive that cylindrical gear meshes with bevel gear has many unique advantages as a new type gear drive, especially in high-power and high-speed applications. This paper studies the generation of tooth profile and the analysis of bend stress of orthogonal-shaft face gear drive.According to the meshing property of orthogonal-shaft face gear drive, the research on the generation of tooth profile of FG is made up of the derivation of the equations of FG tooth, contact lines and contact points on tooth in meshing.A method for modeling of the bending of face gear teeth in concentrated load condition is discussed. In order to calculate dangerous section position of tooth, the parabola method in calculating bending stress is provided based on the principle of material mechanics. Finite element analysis (FEA) is used to calculate the stresses of the pinion and face gear. The discussion is made of the influence of the force location and basic transmission parameters on the stresses of face gear drive. The reduced formulae of the bend stresses of FG drive have been got on the basis of the present formulae and the results of finite element analysis.
