Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) was invented about 160 years ago, but due to many kinds of technical limitations, it didn't get extensive applications. Since 1980s, along with the development of the power electronic devices and power electronic technology, the SRM got more and more attention in the field of drive. The switched reluctance motor has a very simple structure and there are no magnets or windings on the rotor. Due to its simple construction, low cost and high efficiency in a broad range of speed, switched reluctance motor drive system has become the powerful competitor against the traditional AC and DC drive systems. The SRM has many variables to control, such as the turn-on angle, the turn-off angle, the stator voltage and the stator current. So there are many methods to control the SRM, such as Angular Position Control (APC), Current Chopping Control (CCC), and Voltage Control (VC).This thesis introduces the structure of the Switched Reluctance Motor Drive system and its development at home and abroad, gives the linear model and introduces the nonlinear model of the SRM, then gives a detailed description about its working principles and features. On the basis of study on switched reluctance motor drive system's basic theories, traditional PI control is applied to the SRD system for its simple principle, and does some simulation work using the Matlab/Simulink, and gets relatively good results. But the strong nonlinear electromagnetic characteristic of switched reluctance motor increases its control difficulty, and satisfying results can't be easily obtained with conventional PI control methods. So the thesis does some research on the intelligent control strategies for switched reluctance motor drive system. Fuzzy Control do not need much information of the plant, and is very suitable for nonlinear system, so this thesis adopts fuzzy controller to control the SRM, and does some simulation work also with the help of the Matlab/Simulink.On the basis of the simulation, a speed control system for a three phases 2.2kW SRM is developed, its functions are introduced. The control board uses a CPU called dsPIC30F2023 of the company Microchip to process the information of the SRM and gives the commands to operate it. A simple control program is designed in the integrated development environment of MPLAB, and does some test work on the speed control system.
