The driving simulator has become an important tool of training and appraising motorman. In order to acquire the driving license and qualify as a motorman, one must receive strict pre-job training. Before a novice motorman was able to practice operating locomotive on the real railroad, he conventionally had to learn on the job as a visitor for a long time. This kind of training program takes a relatively long amount of time, for instance, the shortest novitiate need 2 years for a national railway driver. Training motorman with driving simulator, a novice motorman who didn't yet qualify for work license still could drive locomotive on the virtual railway, he then was put in the realistic working order and could gain experience. Such training plan accords with the point of view of modern pedagogy much more than the traditional method.This thesis analyzes popular techniques of virtual reality, and provides a technical solution for developing practical and low-cost visual simulation on the basis of demand analysis.The solution Applies 3D graphics software and 3D audio software to build an all-around immersive virtual environment with capability to reproduce various outburst events, such as supply failure, billboard obstruction, traffic accident, rolling stock section separation breakdown and etc. Driving simulator uses real-time computation emulating locomotive control system, so instructor could preset faults in the electrical circuits (i.e. emulating application) to inspect novice motormen's ability of handling failures. Driving simulator presents all-round and thorough training for novice motormen, so it can improve the training quality and efficiency. Training with driving simulator, instructor could strengthen novice motormen's abidance by rules, and appraise them about the degree of knowledge grasped. Thus Instructor is able to weed out unqualified applicants, to some extent, and avoid the risk resulting from unqualified motormen. And moreover, Training with driving simulator does not need any operating locomotive, thus it reduce the interference to normal railway operation. This thesis also summarizes the experience obtained during the development, and proposes the future directions of modifications.
