| The structure of the urban residential space is formed from a combination of the different types of spaces within the city's urban residential areas. It contains the dual attributes of material space and social space. On the material level, the structure of the urban residential space displayed mainly the differences in the spatial morphology, location distribution, environment, and supporting facilities of the various types of residential areas. On the social level, the different types of occupied areas and their locations revealed the differences in the income, education, values, etc…of those residing in these residential areas.Jilin City was built in 1673. With the passage of time, urban planning, construction, and the management system influenced the development and the characteristics of Jilin City's urban residential space throughout different historical periods, but especially since the 1990s of the 20th century. As reforms within the economic, political and social systems continued to deepen, along with the constant development of Jilin City's real estate sector and improvement in living conditions saw the emergence of new features in the urban residential space.This article discusses the urban residential district as a statistic unit for research on the urban residential space. The author will provide research analysis based on the survey data collected from Jilin City's residential areas, and summarize the present five types of residential districts in Jilin City: traditional residential district, work-unit residential district, mixed residential district, medium-low-grade commercial housing district and high-grade commercial housing district. This research utilized density analysis, circle distance analysis and landscape analysis to analyze the various types of Jilin City's urban residential space's morphological characteristics. This article summarizes the three levels of the spatial structure in Jilin City's present residential space:central urban area, peripheral urban area, and urban fringe area. The author utilized the resource availability method to analyze Jilin City's urban residential space and used the ArcGIS software overlay analysis function to obtain the resource availability index diagram. The author concluded that Jilin City's urban residential space's resource availability can be divided into five levels and discovered that Jilin City's built up area resource availability could be categorized as part of a high index. By measuring the various types of residential district in Jilin City against the resource availability index, the author found that the mixed residential district had the highest index while the traditional residential district's resource availability was lowest. Based on the surveys conducted in Jilin City and by comparing the different characteristics in the social structure of residents in urban residential districts saw the emergence of social differentiations. The residents within the residential district had fewer and fewer homogeneous attributes, residents' lives were clearly confined to their own communities and this resulted in watered-down neighborly relations as well as distinct aging characteristics. |
