The research of this paper is one of the sub-topics of Professor Zhimin Li's Natural Science Foundation project, which subject is "adapt the quality of education in primary and secondary schools and architectural space environment model". Same as the classroom space, the exterior space is also an important part of the main space in primary schools. The exterior space is playing an indispensable role not only in its commitment to education but also the terms of the functions for everyday use. In recent years, with the release of a series of new policies about basic education in rural areas, the primary schools integrate the educational resources and optimizing resource allocation. Along with it is that boarding has become the trend at primary school, and most pupils have the extended school day. The exterior space of primary school has played an increasingly heavy role in rural pupils'life, the improvement of educational environment in classroom can not cope with the ensuing problems of learning and living. This article aims to study on the design principles of exterior space in rural primary schools, in northwest China, start from the geographic environment and the students' behavior of a variety of school life.This study defined the concept of "exterior space in rural primary school" and the scope of this concept. By a large number of field visits, mapping, photographing, questionnaires, observation and communication, conducted the classification and summary about the reality of the external space environment in rural primary schools at the present stage. After raising the questions, studied the revelations brought by the traditional educational philosophy of China, and learned from the excellent examples of The study from the State Natural Science Fund to "adapt the quality of education in primary and secondary schools the modern theory abroad. Analysised of the various acts of students and teachers, had a holistic look at the role which the exterior space environment played in their lives, made a in-depth study about how the exterior space of school campus make the positive impact on teaching and learning activities, and participate in the lives of teachers and students. Knowing the necessity of exterior space design, and get the design methods and space models of exterior space in rural primary school.
