Building envelope plays an important role in building energy efficiency, through which the heat escaped and lost more than 70% of the total energy consumption. It means a lot to give energy-saving research on building envelope according to the remarkably reduce of energy consumption with reasonable design.Analyzing the current situation of building envelope, this article discusses the research methods on energy saving of it, including heat transfer theory study, steady-state calculation and dynamic calculation of energy consumption, and virtual simulation way. As the failure of combining two major areas of virtual simulation technique application in buildings, the concept of integrating energy simulation with architectural design is proposed along with feasible analysis.Based on theoretical study, the application research of actual project is carried out focusing on three office buildings in energy-saving demonstration projects of Wuhan University of Technology science park. Three different building envelope programs focusing on outside wall, exterior windows and roof are designed according to the energy-saving design objective of the project and energy-saving standards for public buildings. The thermal performance of building envelops are calculated and proved to be conformed with the energy-saving demand.Then the analysis on building envelopes is carried out by means of virtual simulation as following:(1) Doing energy simulation of buildings under different envelope program, obtaining entire energy-saving effects respectively. It is indicated that the designed envelope programs can reduce energy consumption from 30% to 36%, the better thermal performance it possesses, the better energy-saving effect it remains.(2) Making 3D simulation of buildings to present them in a realistic way, then importing the 3D models to VR-Platform.(3) Compiling the properties of building models, including material composition, thermal performance and energy-saving effects of different building envelope programs. It is convenient to get information of every program in the VRP interface.The integrated application of energy simulation system and building virtual reality system develops the advantages of virtual simulation technology used in energy-saving research adequately, which offers more intuitive platform of the related study and contributes greatly to further publicity of building energy efficiency.
