Energy consumption from buildings, along with their carbon emissions is a subject that has gained much attention over the last decade. As identified by the literature review, over 40% of carbon emissions are from buildings. Despite the fact that UK and China have energy policies to reduce building energy consumption and CO2 emissions, the question is do the policies really help building save energy and CO2 emissions? For this reason, this project aims to compare the energy policies between UK and China, analyse the building energy consumption and the cost for improving buildings structurally, and make suggestions for new energy policies. A variety of methods were used, including a site visit and IES software. A number of recommendations were suggested for energy policies and the results gained showed that lower natural ventilation rates in summer and winter are the most effective and cost-efficient way to save building energy consumption and CO2 emissions. These results and recommendations serve as suggestions for future improvements of energy policies.
