Under the situation of international energy crisis and global environmental degradation, as a developing country with rapid growing economy, the residential energy consumption also keeps growing. Cold area is the area with developed economy and large populations, the energy consumption of heating in winter and cooling in summer is very serious. Due to the features of low technology, low price, and integrate with building easily, passive design becomes a feasible strategy to reduce the consumption. Thus, the research on passive design in cold region is very important both theoretically and practically.This paper takes the main housing pattern-multilevel housing as the main subject, and discusses passive design method. The first chapter is the literature review of related papers and masters, and proposes the research point and innovation of this paper. The second chapter further concludes and analyze related theories. In the third and forth chapters, through listing and appraising current situation of domestic multilevel housing passive design and cases of foreign passive designs, the defeat and development direction of domestic housing passive design is pointed out.On the basis on above analysis, the fifth chapter discussed multilevel housing passive design in cold area systematically from three aspects-graphics, elevation, and profile. Generally speaking, discussing passive design method of inner space from graphic level, discussing passive design method of walls, windows, balconies and proves from elevation level, and discussing energy circle and transfer from profile level. The purpose is to change the negative passive design method of domestic housing that depends on materials and structures to the positive passive design that concluded from the analysis of cases. Meanwhile, industrialized design concept are brought in, and integrated design of passive energy-saving technology and multilevel housing are realized.In the sixth chapter, design method of multilevel housing in cold area are derived conceptually from concluded design method, and the feasibility is examined by PHPP. After all, architecture technology and art are integrated, and a feasible multilevel housing passive design is proposed to save residential energies.
