Railway industry is in a high speed development in China. The high speed locomotives have been the main force in passenger transportation, and plenty of railway and subway is under building. Along with the speed improvement, the safety of locomotive operation has concentrated more and more focus. As one of the essential parts of locomotive, the condition of wheels has a big influence on the safety, and therefore, almost every country's government pays lots of attention to the task of monitoring wheels. Right now, there are various kinds of devices which are used for monitoring wheels. In this paper, the main purpose is to design and analyze a new portable measuring device, which is used for measuring wheel profile, and based on laser distance measuring sensor and DSP-TMS320F2812 control chip. It has realized the essential functions, including data collecting, calculating data, transmitting data, and displaying.Based on the abundant pre-researching, and according to the features of laser sensor and wheel thread shape, this paper proposes a reasonable design proposal. The device consists of a laser sensor, which is fixed on the device, a mirror, which reflects the laser light, and a photoelectric encoder, which is tied to the axis of the mirror. Through the calculating algorithm, the DSP chip will transform the information, collecting from laser sensor and encoder, to the coordinates under rectangular coordinate system. By pivoting the mirror, the device can receive all the coordinate of points on the thread surface, and then draw the curve of wheel thread and get the wheel profile. The paper has analyzed the precision in theory, designed the structure of the device, and worked out the best position of measuring. Meanwhile, it also finished the software programming, components selecting, schematic circuit diagram drawing, and so on, basically realizing the functions of the device. Finally, using the experimental platform, and DSP development board, it test and verify the design proposal, and analyzing the data. The experiment result shows that this device is able to measure the wheel profile, and get the curve of the wheel thread. This design proposal has reference values and application prospects.
