Technical Review On Facade Conservation Of Modern Building

A large quantity of highly qualified modern buildings has been preserved in Shanghai, which composes an important part of the city texture. With the development of society and people's awareness, the protection of modern architecture has been of great social concern. But a complete architectural protection theory system has not been established. Also a lack of the necessary review on protection principles, technical methods appears. The result is that conflict between the principles of protection technology arises, which ultimately leads to "fix destruction."On the basis of investigation and research on the protection practices for modern architecture in Shanghai, this paper conducts a review on protection principles and technical methods. It is of great practical significance. Meanwhile, the paper also attempts to optimize the operation of the current technical approach so as to establish technical specifications for protection and renovation in the future.The paper is divided into six chapters:Chapter I: Introduction. It describes research background, meaning, and interpretation of the relevant concepts.Chapter II: Overview of protection practice. It briefly describes the state of protection of modern architecture in Shanghai, recalling the protection history of modern building protection. Then through five kinds of typical cases to illustrate the characteristics of the protection intervention models, and then summers up the achievements and shortcomings in the modern architecture protection in Shanghai.Chapter III: Analysis of protection principles. From the value constitution of architectural heritages, it analyses the main principles of protection at home and abroad, thus establishing adaptive principles and technical methods for the fa?ade of modern architecture.Chapter IV: Review of protection technology. Protection technology is divided into "traditional process reproduction" and "modern technical interventions". On one hand, it collects and collates the traditional techniques. On the other hand it reviews and estimates the modern intervention techniques. The main focus is on the flexibility between the technology and the principles.Chapter V: Protection case study. By a detailed analysis of the protection of Chongsi Building's facade in Xuhui Middle School, it explores "how to frame protection principles, how to choose protection methods, as well as how to use protection technology" in the practices.Chapter VI: Conclusion. It summarizes the full text and prospects the follow-up studies.
