Special vehicle is designed for the special working conditions or the special function, so it requires some special structures comparing to the common cars. With the development of the vehicle's function, the structures have been changing at the same time. Engineers have paid much attention to the improvement of the structures to be adaptted to the changing function and clients'requirements.The paper concentrates on a certain kind of special vehicle, which has been produced and worked actually. Based on the thought that function decides structure, the research is made in order to satisfy the requirements of practical function and optimize the suspension model. It takes analysis combining actual model and virtual prototyping model, theoretic analyzing and car experiments using the multi-body system dynamics theories and software. The paper carries out the kinematics and dynamics simulation of the suspension system and studies the optimizing and matching relationship between the layout of the suspension and its parameters (the stiffness and damping). The influence of the suspension system on the vehicle performance is also researched so as to make sure the special function of the whole car. In addition, because the shock damper plays different roles in the comfort performance and chassis self-locking, the research of the whole comfort performance of the car and the self-locking of the suspension is made. And the structure of shock damper with two conditions (self-locking and without self-locking) is analyzed and computed.A new kind of shock damper is designed, and it can keep the comfort performance of the suspension while achieving the special function of the vehicle. The experiment model is also produced. In the end, the experiment on test bed and the car is made respectively.The result proves that the shock damper designed in the paper can satisfy the comfort performance and chassis self-locking completely and the method is right and feasible.
