| This study is based on the urgency of conserving the ancient villages as a kind of Material Cultural Heritage as a result that now is in a background of rapid urbanization, the new socialist countryside development and a tourist boom. Guangzhou as a key city leading the economic development in our country is under greater pressure from the ancient village conservation. Therefore, the research focused on the conservation and development for ancient villages in Guangzhou city, especially which are located in expansion areas of the urban fringes, is very necessary.In this study, all the material resources are collected by the means of investigation, questionnaire and statistics. Also, the research finds out the difference and consistence between the typical patterns at present which are aimed at ancient village conservation and redevelopment in the process of urban fringes developing, in order to conclude some successful experiences for conference and improvement. On account of the present situation that historic factors on those villages are being broken into pieces, this paper combines the relatively theories to advance a new development pattern—regeneration pattern—which is better suited for developing those villages and have applied in the conservation case of Daling.The whole paper is composed of four parts:Firstly, the paper introduces the overview of the ancient villages located in the urban fringes of Guangzhou city. From the description, it is very easy to find that both the conservation and development on those villages are facing great challenges because the impact from urban development is becoming stronger, and it is in urgent need of expedient development mode.In the second part, there is the analysis and evaluation on the typical pattern for conserving and redeveloping the ancient villages located in the urban fringe areas of Guangzhou. It is carried out by three aspects, redevelopment object, redevelopment dynamics and redevelopment measures, to show the advantages and disadvantages in each pattern, also, to summarize some useful experience.What the next is advancing a new pattern—regeneration pattern. To explore the new pattern, this part analyses there aspects of it, regeneration object, regeneration dynamics and interacting regeneration. The process is, at first, constructing the initiating region, and then constructing a network consisted of historic elements in the village based on the region, in order to achieve the objective of developing the revealing function which is oriented to urban.In the last part, the paper discusses the conservation and redevelopment project in Daling village to show how to apply the regeneration pattern in ancient village redevelopment. |
