Currently, there are two ways of close quarter intersections management. One way is through the transformation of roads and intersections, such as the construction of cloverleaf junction. The second way is channelized intersection and signal optimization based on the geometric and traffic conditions of intersection. The construction of cloverleaf junction is generally difficult to implement. Comparatively, it is more feasible and practical measures to improve the operating conditions of close quarter intersection through the study of the close quarter intersection characteristics and temporal and spatial resource optimization. Signal timing of close quarter Intersection use coordinate control accompanied by channelization and Traffic inducement facilities to reduce the parking time in the intersection so that vehicles can travel unimpeded. Meanwhile, the vehicle can travel in accordance with or close to design speed to access to non-stop wayleave as far as possible. Current correlative researches are not so many, this paper study on this field.First, this paper study on close quarter intersections. The close quarter intersection formula is deduced according to this characteristic that the speed traffic flow driving process obtains acceleration section, weaving section and deceleration sections and cited Lane Changing model of acceptance gap and the constant acceleration distance formula of kinematics. Traffic flow characteristics of close quarter Intersection and conflict analyze transit characteristic of traffic flow and discuss issues arising from traffic flow in the close quarter intersection, use the potential hazards models of conflict points, consider the impact of traffic flow on the conflict, identify the weight and the degree of malignancy of the intersection potential risk caused by different types of conflict and several typical close quarter intersections carry through quantitative conflict analysis.Secondly, this paper studies the spatial layout optimization method according to the quarter of close quarter intersection has two types of control modes: coordinated control of two intersections, the overall control as an intersection. The design uses coordinated control of spatial layout optimization based on whether the main road has medial strip. The spatial layout optimization as an intersection consider that the second way is one-way traffic and turn left waiting settings.
