With the rapid development of technology and globalization of economy, there is a growing demand for innovative products. As a comprehensive industry, automotive product development enterprises must be accelerating the development of new products, improving its quality, reducing costs and providing high quality services by best project management practice. New product development is a complex process which ranges from technical and economic feasibility study, engineering development, design validation etc. till mass production. It involves lots of empirical knowledge of engineering design. Knowledge Management and Knowledge-based Engineering can integrate engineering design knowledge therefore re-use it for later product design activities to achieve direct benefit in vehicle development. Knowledge management and knowledge engineering application is particularly important and urgent.This article aims to explore the research of product design and development based on knowledge engineering. Firstly, study of knowledge management and the fundamentals of knowledge engineering. Based on analysis of product knowledge model, the automotive engine cooling sub-system model is built accordingly. It implies how to apply KBE to current project management, how to introduce vehicle architecture development and Design Quality Verification (DQV) model checking method in initial stage, thus to reengineer and optimize the design development and validation process. Finally, the benefits of cost and time saving are summarized as well as management efficiency achieved. The research of Knowledge-based engineering product design and development in project management can strengthen market competitiveness of the enterprises, increase their capacity and advance the manufacturing technology level to be a"qualitative leap", it possesses important practical significance.
