Independent commercial building is stand-alone and retail architecture. As an important type of the building, independent commercial building didin't undergo a long time. But it develops so quickly, which appears a number of forms in the west. Such as department store, supermarket, shopping centre and combined store. In our country, for some historical reasons, it experienced a hard time in the past. After the opening, there were some improvement, but we still face many problems. So it's necessary to research and clarify this kind of building.This thesis begins with chapter, which mainly introduce the brief history of the shop, while analysising its background and function in the commercial system. It also sums up the general characters according to retailing history, custom's psychology and behavior and prospect the trend.At the seccond chapter, the thesis briefly concludes the factor related to planning, for example example total area, site, the conflict between multistory and the commercial rules, and the ways treat the site in mountain areas. Of course, the master plan's designing is taken into consideration.The third and the fourth chapter is the focus, the author introduce the strcture of the function and the ratio of two parts. After discussing the plan's scale, form, circulation and the atrium's designing in different aspects, the thesis mentions the structure and supporting systems.Much of the fifth chapter is rated to the methods of exterior facades designing. This thesis tries to conclude some treatments and elements in this three angles: Urban space, context of the site and the building's characters.The sisth chapter analyses the importance of space adaptability design. And try to give some actual methods.
