Traditional urban space and life is gradually created in accordance with the most natural and comfortable way of walking. Therefore, the traditional urban space and life owns the space feature and environment which is closest to the human nature and richest in humanistic spirit. With the development of modern science and technology, motorization provides human effective and convenient way of living, but it alters the traditional way of living and the original urban layout. Now, humans realize the importance of walking, which improves the quality of urban life and environment, and forms the urban features. More and more people attach importance to the walking system.In many m Middle scale cities of China, people still preserve parts of traditional urban space and walking habit, but the fast urbanization process and the increasing requirement for the motorization impact the traditional urban space and walking experience. Considering the the problems that the walking systems in the medium-sized cities are facing and the developing feature and trend of these systems, this paper discusses the principles and strategies that the medium-sized cities should apply to the walking systems, which will be the guide for the construction of the walking systems in the sustainable Middle scale cities.Chapter One: This chapter introduces the developing background of the walking system, the purpose and significance of the research, research objects, research methods and research theories of walking system at home and abroad.Chapter Two: This chapter describes the developing history of walking system, systematically analyze the element which influences the urban walking system's concept and classification and the construction of the walking system, and lay the foundation for the following research.Chapter Three: Considering the current developing features of the Middle scale cities in China and the commuting features of the citizens, this chapter summarizes the problems the walking systems are facing and analyzes the features and trends of the walking systems in the Middle scale cities. Chapter Four: Based on the researches on the current situation of the walking systems, combining the walking system theories and successful models, this chapter suggests the construction strategies on three levels—macro walking system frame, mid-scale walking unit and micro walking-friendly space.Chapter Five: This chapter uses the strategies previously suggested and the walking system in Yunfu City to do the practical research.
