The Hybrid III dummy model is the most widely used dummy model in vehicle crash test and vehicle safety design. It is based on the American peoples, while Chinese bodysize is smaller than the Americans. Therefore, it becomes a question that whether the auto designed according to the response of the Hybridâ…¢50th percentile dummy can protect the 50th percentile Chinese occupant well. Based on this, the difference of frontal impact response between people of different sizes was studied, as well as the occupant protection strategy suitable for Chinese people.In this article, seven frontal impact simulation models were established through the use of multi-body kinematics software MADYMO. There are the same occupant restraint system and human body posture in these models, but the size of human body models increases in turn. Hybridâ…¢50 model,Hybridâ…¢95 model,4 volunteer human body models and the 50th percentile Chinese occupant model are included.By analyzing the difference of frontal impact response among bodys of different size, conclusions were obtained that existing occupant restraint system is not conducive to protect little man and protect the 50th percentile American occupant well, while protect other size occupant poorly.In order to study the occupant protection strategy suitable for Chinese people, optimization of the occupant restraint system was carried out based on the 50th percentile Chinese occupant model. The parameters which have a high significance level on the WIC were selected through orthogonal design and range analysis. The optimal solution of the occupant restraint system parameters were obtained through the combination of response surface method and sequential quadratic programming optimization.The results show that compare to the best restraint system suitable for the 50th percentile American occupant, the best restraint system suitable for the 50thpercentile Chinese occupant has the following characteristics:smaller belt stiffness, earlier time of airbag deployment, the greater vent size, smaller mass flow velocity of inflation.The difference of frontal impact response between the 50th percentile Chinese occupant and the The Hybrid III 50 dummy was studied through a Low-speed sled crash test, the results show that the head and neck injury risk of the 50th percentile Chinese occupant are larger than those of Hybridâ…¢50 dummy.
