With the development of economy and city construction in our country, the degree and speed of China living environment building are no longer as we have been. Residential construction is an important aspect of urban construction, which is closely linked with each city slicker's life. People try their best to create a more humane habitat space. However, settlement construction develops until now, also exposing many problems and deficiencies:for example, super-sized residential area, isolated settlements from the urban environment, the loss of vitality of the street, inefficient public facilities, Sole construction pattern, urban traffic congestion, convergence of urban style, and so on. These kinds of regrettable facts are reminding us to reconsider the present situation, and seek for the turning point for the transformation.This article bases on the analysis of some problems of urban housing pattern in Chinese city nowadays, taking reference by the western advanced theory and practice, experimentally introducing a concept, which is named "housing block". It intends to seek a living pattern, which tallies with the contemporary development requirements of China's national conditions and the times.In the first chapter, research has started with author's consideration from four angles about "Chinese city housing pattern development". At the same time, readers have been demanded to consider that how will Chinese urban housing pattern to develop in the future?The second chapter has combed the housing pattern evolution course of the traditional cities and modern cities in our country. And it has also analyzed the abuse of the "housing estate", which is the housing pattern in our cities presently. Change is imperative.The third chapter has drawn on relevant theories of the West, namely, "New Urbanism", "Smart Growth", "Compact city" and the theory about Community. It has laid the foundation for the research of "housing block".The fourth chapter has analyzed the establishment foundation of "housing block" in Chinese cities, embarked from our country actual national condition. And it also has suggested some solution to the problems. The solution can not only conduce to the construction of "housing block", but also conducive to sustainable development of cities. In the fifth chapter, the characteristic and practical significance of "housing block" has mainly been introduced, further strengthening the reader's understanding of "housing block".The sixth chapter is main part in this article. In this chapter, the author has summed up the plan design method of "housing block". The entire system has been constructed from five aspects, that is, the structure plan, the traffic plan, the landscape plan, the facility plan and the management plan. And the first three aspects have been mainly narrated, so that the spatial shape of "housing block" could manifest clearly.The seaside residential area in Muzhang of Japan would be introduced in the seventh chapter. It is a complete and typical settlement of "housing block", and it is also a milestone in the history of habitation construction in Japan. Through the introduction, the author hopes that it can make some suggestions for the habitation construction in Chinese modern cities, and enrich our country's community planning theories and the design methods, and it will inspire the Chinese habitation construction in the present fast urbanized advancing stage.In short, the construction of "housing block" is an area which has not been involved in Chinese cities presently. The author hopes that the introduction of this model will promote more scholars in China to study urban living environment, so that we can find out the correct development direction in the shortest time to contribute to the building of our settlements.
