As the main part of a car, the manufacturing quality of BIW plays an important role on the quality of whole vehicle and the market competition. The welding locating datum is the important content of research on car body simultaneous engineering(SE) and welding fixture design, as well as an important factor to ensure the welding accuracy and manufacturing quality. Due to the lower rigidity of car body panel, the design of welding location datum is complex. And few research on this domain was done at home.In the above context, the paper researched into the reasonable design of welding location datum design criteria, methodology, and effective optimization method in terms of engineering problems.The research focused on the design and optimization of welding location datum. First, the structure of BIW and welding process was discussed, and structure, features and design of welding fixture was studied. Secondly, the weld error analysis model for BIW was established based on FEM, by analyzing the mechanism of weld error, studying the impact of location datum on the weld error, generating the algorithm for the weld error. Then, the design theory on the location datum was introduced, especially the"N-2-1"principle. Based on the practical experience, the design method and principle is discussed, as well as the design of welding location datum system. Finally, with the above analysis of car body assembly variation, the optimization model for optimization of the welding location datum is was established, and the optimization method and process was studied using various theories, such as genetic algorithm (GA). A case study showed that the design of weld location datum was optimized and weld error was reduced.The study on the design and optimization of BIW welding location datum in this paper, has important theoretical and practical significance in the design of welding location datum, car body simultaneous engineering and welding accuracy and manufacturing quality.
