Flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is a real-time automated system. It consists of robot, Computer-controlled Machines, and Numerical controlled machines (CNC). It can learn from real-time intelligent system. NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) presented an effective method for designing real-time intelligent system. It is called Real-time Control System (RCS).This article studies the intelligent system design tools-RCS, analyzes its design and communication approach, and concludes a general method about hierarchical distributed system FMS. According to specific system architecture, it achieves modeling and communicating of FMS, and further achieves the control and management system on this basis.RCS has two meanings:first, the RMA (Reference Model Architecture) theory, second, RCS communication theory.RCS is a methodology as well as a software library. By functional division and modular processing using RMA theory, FMS forms a hierarchical distributed architecture, and then using NML_MODULE module class implements each module of FMS. NML_MODULE module class has been included by RCS library.Communication between modules is implemented by using RCS communication theory. Owing to communication with RCS is multi-platform, by using its Communication Management System (CMS) and Neutral Message Language (NML) communication tools, this article realizes NC110 communication module which is 'based on TCP. On the basis of this communication module, it also realizes real-time monitoring about NC110 and remote operation of the machine.According to FMS control management system functions and the actual situation, it achieves the production management subsystem, integrates NC110 real-time monitoring subsystem, and implements moving of robot with control card. According to the principles of Database, it implements relational database. The flexible manufacturing system has outstanding performance in practical applications.
