With the rapid development of economic in China, the use of cranes becomes broader and broader. Meanwhile, to meet the requirement of increasing complex construction project, cranes develop toward large-scale and multiple-function. Because of the bad work environment and complex working condition, the conventional testing always takes too much time and energy, more important, it cannot timely holds the operation status of cranes, which leads to a decline of testing quality. To solve these problems, online health monitoring for crane is presented. Health monitoring technical breaks the limitation of conventional testing, using intelligent sensor technology, not only implements long-term, online monitoring for crane metal structure status, but also gives warning when damage occurred, in order to reduce the possibility of accident. At the same time, with the data those monitoring systems accumulate, combining with related theories of safety assessment for crane structure, it can give the evaluation for crane's health, which reduces the waste of repeat testing.First, the paper introduces the constitution of health monitoring system, and principle of sensor system. Compared with properties of different sensor, MIO option fiber grating is chosen as monitor sensor. Second, analyzing of requirement and function of health monitoring based on option fiber grating sensor, with the character of crane metal structure, a gantry crane health monitoring system, integrated with monitoring, early warming and safety assessment, is developed.Third, a crane girder early warming method based on time series analysis is proposed. The paper studies of 4 different kinds of ways to build time series model, and chooses ARIMA model to build mode for the stress of the crane girder. Using similar measure method of time series, the bridge structure condition is recognized. Early warning is implemented based on this method. Finally, for engineering practice, a crane experimental model is build to preview of typical operating condition. The health monitoring software system mentioned before and early warning based on time series are used to monitor and pre-warn.
