Lifting machinery, whose special structure and the nature of work bring greatrisks to people, plays important role in social production. Formerly, for liftingmachinery health monitoring, the conventional electrical sensor measurementtechnology was mainly used. However, lives of electrical sensor elements are short,and measurements are easily affected by environment, especially in the harshenvironment. Thus, long-term on-line monitoring can not be achieved. Well, FiberBragg Grating (FBG) sensors with long life, high accuracy, anti-electromagneticinterference, etc. make up for the shortcomings of traditional sensor technology.So, they can be used to monitor the health of large lifting machinery in coldregions.In this paper, the requirements of lifting equipment safety monitoring projectsand FBG sensors are analyzed. Combined with the structure and workingcharacteristics of lifting equipment, a kind of safety monitoring system of liftingequipment based on FBG is designed. The hardware includes a FBG sensor systemand a FBG demodulation system. According to the basic knowledge of structuralhealth monitoring system, the structural composition and working characteristicsof lifting equipment, the software modules of safety monitoring system of liftingequipment based on FBG is achieved. Furthermore, the basic functions of thesoftware are accomplished by LabVIEW.Finally, for the practical application of lifting equipment, simulationexperiments of lifting equipment based on FBG are done. The needs of practicalengineering are considered during the process of selecting measuring points,pasting sensors and doing experiments. Especially, the package and protection of sensors in cold place is discussed in detail. In order to prove the generalapplicability of the experimental data for the testing of lifting equipment, themeasured data are randomly selected and analyzed. It preliminary verifies theimplementation of this monitoring system of lifting equipment.
