Kuianchun is a newly synthesized antibacterial and growth-promoting agent. This paper selected a battery of three short-term tests, including Ames test, microuncleus test and sperm abnormality test to detect the mtitagenicity of Kuianchun. The carcinogenicity prediction and battery selection method(CPBS method) was used to determine the probability of carcinogenicity of Kuianchun based upon the results of above mentioned short-term tests. In addition, traditional teratogenic test was selected to study teratogenicity of Kuianchun. Ames test showed that Kuianchun is mutagenic for Salmonella i)phimurium Strains TA9S and TA100 both in the absense and presense of microsomal metbolic activation system(S9-rnix).However, the mutagenicity was reduced by the addition of S9-mix. In micronucleus test, Kuianchun was adminstered intraperitoneally to male mouse 30 and 6h before they were killed. The result indicated that the number of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes(PCEs) in the mouse bone marrow induced by Kuianchun was not significiant compared with the negative control(S0%DMSO) (P>0.05). In sperm abnomality test, Kuianchun was administered by gastric intubation to male mouse as a suspension in 2%Tween-80. The doseages levels were 450,750,1000 and 1 500mg/kg per day for 5 days. The result indicated that the percentage of abnomal sperms induced by Kuianchun was not significiant(P>0.05) compared with the negative control. In traditional teratogenic test, Kuianchun was given orally to pregnant mouse at 1/30,1/20 and 1/15LD5~, during 6-l5days of pregnancy period(the LD~ ~9000mg/kg). Neither maternal toxicity, embryotoxicity nor teratogenic effects were observed at all tested 25 doseags. The protiallntr or carcbogetucrt of foranctiun is 23.s%(e =0.238) outunned byusing CPBS M. The result SUggested tha KuianchUn is a nonCarcingen.
