Maize as silage leads one of the way of maize using and developing in line of farming and stock raising. This experiment explored silage production characteristics and nutritive quality of five varieties of three types maize from 2001 to 2002. The results could be theoretical fundament for optimizing cultivation in maize for silage production. The main results are as follows:Different types maize had different matter production ability and nutritive quality because of different growth periods, population structure and physiological characteristics. Dry matter accumulation amounts was KQ1>ZD9409>DLB>KD8> YD 13, fresh matter accumulation amounts was KQ1> KD8>ZD9409>DLB> YD13, grain yields of ZD9409 and YD 13 had no significant difference, but both were significantly higher than that of varieties of special silage type maize. Dry matter of special silage type maize distributed in stem-vagina was more than the other organs, but that of maize of foodstuff and silage was more in grains. Density and nitrogen application treatments had different effects on fresh and dry matter accumulation of different types maize, but they were all showed increasing trend along with increase of the plant density and nitrogen application . Dry matter distribution was not significantly affected by the cultivation measure.Nutrients content of every organ and whole plant crop (WPC) of different types maize was different, the same as the nutrients distribution in organs. Representation of WPC nutrients content: content of crude protein was KD8> ZD9409> DLB >YD13> KQ in 9/20; ether extract content of maize as foodstuff and silage was the highest, followed by general maize and special silage maize ; crude fiber content of special silage maize was higher than that of maize as foodstuff and silage, general maize' was the lowest; content of nitrogen free extract of different types maize was opposite to the crude fiber content; ash content was special silage types maize >general type maize >foodstuff and silage maize. Nutrient accumulations of different types -maize were different because of the differences of nutrients content and dry matter accumulations. Cultivation measures such as plant density and nitrogen application had effects on the nutrients content and accumulation. The maturity of maize had obviously effects on forage nutritive value. The experimental results showed that: YD13 could be harvested in 9/20 or ahead of that properly, its grains and stalk could be used separately (stalk be silaged); ZD9409 could be used separately also, its optimum harvesting date was 9/20; theappropriate harvesting dale of KQ1, DLB and KD8 was 9/20 or ahead properly, and WPC silage was suitable to their using.
