Currently, there is a high rate of occurrence of piglet pseudo-rabies on most pig farms in Henan Province, posing a great danger to the pig industry province-wide, especially to piglets with high rates of morbidity and death as well as pregnant sows with abortion, stillbirth and mummies. To effectively control the spread of the disease in the province, a survey of 191 piglets suspected of pseudo-rabies on 25 pig farms was conducted. The survey showed that most of the examined piglets wee PRV-infected, an average of 77.4% PRV positive. The epidemiology of the disease in the province was characterized by high morbidities in piglets below 20 days old with a high death rate as high as above 95%, and little morbidity in weaned pigs. The breeding pig could be the carrier of the pseudo-rabies virus, which infected piglets through sows during pregnancy or lactation. Breeding pigs had a previous infection. Unvaccinated pigs often got sick and died by the herd on the privately owned farms. Mixed infections characterized the epidemiology of pseudo-rabies in Henan Province over recent years. Large pig farms had a lower rate of morbidity than medium and small ones. Investigation results showed a tendency of spread of pseudo-rabies in Henan Province. Comprehensive measures were taken on 5 PRV infected farms with satisfactory results achieved.
