Based on the investigation of groupware GIS technologies, an irrigation management information system was developed using MapX groupware technologies, which is an instructive exploration and experiment in theory and methodology of information and GIS of irrigation systems.(1) Through the comparative analysis of irrigation management information systems based on relation database technologies and GIS technologies, we found that the latter has the merits such as integration of graphic data and attribution data, visualization of data and display of further characters using attribution data. The traditional relation-based database, which is good at storing and managing attribution data, is not able to describe and manage those data. Therefore, the combination of GIS and irrigation system management is proposed to develop a GIS-based irrigation system management information system;(2)Through the comparative analysis of 3 application development types of GIS, we believe that the groupware development is suitable for development of irrigation management information system. As an example, Hubei Zhanghe Irrigation management information system, was developed using MapX and VB and the functions of the system were presented;(3) A conception of catch-store coefficient was proposed to describe the capability of ponds to catch and store runoff. Using the on-site pond survey data, the application catch-store coefficient was investigated. 3S-Based pond management and spatial analysis of ponds using catch-store coefficient were explored.(4) A review on one of the important issues in irrigation system management, irrigation water allocation decision making, was carried out and the integration of irrigation water allocation decision-making theory and practice was investigated;...
