Sweet cherry(Prunus avium)is one of the most important fruit trees in north of china withits beautiful color, precocity, and nutritious. It is distributed very widely in the world.Because of shorting of dwarf rootstocks, planters always take several years to take back theirinvestment. At the same time, commonly-used rootstock makes sweet trees more vigor andnot easily managed. It is very important to breed or select excellent dwarf rootstock thatadapt well to the climes and soil in the china. Gisela5 had been used as an excellent sweetcherry dwarf rootstock for many years in occident. But it is very important and urgent toevaluate Gisela5 and clarify its dwarfing mechanisms before popularization.There are four parts in the paper. Evaluation of Gisela5 including the effect of Gisela5on biological, photosynthetic characteristics and the resistance of drought, flooding, coldnessstress of sweet cherry. Then, the dwarfing mechanisms were discussed through analysis of theendohormone.Results show that,1. Gisela5's ability of dwarf is not showed distinctly when the sweet cherry is young.The height of the cultivar with Gisela5 is 89.7% of Colt 。 But it can improve thephotosynthetic characteristics of trees, and can accelerate the development.2. The dwarfing ability of Gisela5's will be showed obviously when the sweet cherrytrees reach to production. Gisela5 can change the proportion of different branches, andstimulate the development of spur. These can make sweet cherry to reach full production moreearly. And it has very well affinity between Gisela5 and the varieties from Ukraine.3. The results showed that Gisela5 has the powerful adaptability to cold and drought,it's lethal temperature is -32.5℃. But it's adaptability to flooding is poorer than P. serrulata. Itcan be used selectively in china. It is very important to drain when raining.4. Gisela5 can induce the higher content of endohormone ABA, Zr in the stem of sweetcherry. Perhaps it is one of the reasons of its dwarfing ability. The content of IAA has noclear relationship with dwarfing ability.5. According the above results, we can say that Gisela5 has obviously ability of dwarf,and can be used in some areas in china.
