| As an important component of biomass energy in china, agro-stalks are of some features: scattered distribution, low heating value and higher transportation cost To develop an economical and practical technology according to these features is of great importance to solve the issues of air pollution and energy waste caused by field burning of agro-stalks.In order to take use of agro-stalks smoldering as heat resource of residence heating in rural place in winter, investigation on property values and smoldering characteristics of agro-stalks were conducted. Based on this an agro-stalk smoldering furnace was designed.Firstly, the property values of typical agro-stalks in Shandong were investigated. By experiments the bulk density, moisture content, heating value and elemental contents of corn stalk, wheat stalks bean stalk and durra stalk and etc. were measured. Then the module between the elemental contents and heating value with the method of Artificial Neural Network was establishes. It provides the basic data for the design of the smoldering equipment. Secondly, the smoldering analysis experiments were conducted using simultaneous thermogrametric analyzer. According to the curves obtained from experiments, heat efRcient of smoldering of them was obtained to be all above 55%.Based on this, a residential heating furnace using biomass smoldering was designed. Experimental results showed that in the furnace with the size of 460mm × 330mm × 450mm, wheat stalk, corn stalk and Durra stalk about 3.6kg are able to smolder stably. And the temperature at the center of the furnace kept 400℃ for more than 416 minutes, 168 minutes and 165 minutes. The flaming combustion arose in the beginning of cotton stalk and Durra stalk, however, the flaming combustion arose in the whole experiment process of Bean stalk.These researches provide a reference for the smoldering or similar application method of the agro-stalks.
