Based on the survey of Chaenomeles cultivars resources, the numerical taxonomic method was used for the cluster analysis of 22 cultivars and 90 germplasm resources with 22 morphological characters related to fruit and seeds. The clustering result about cultivars revealed that Chaenomeles plant resources could be divided into 4 phenetic groups according to their botanical sources, namely C. japonica system (Ⅰ), C. speciosa system (Ⅱ), C. cathayensis system (Ⅲ) and C. thibetica (Ⅳ). The clustering result about germplasm resources revealed that the classification results between cultivars and germplasm resources were basically the same, and a larger proportion of the germplasm resources both C. cathayensis system and C. speciosa system could be divided into 4 and 2 variety group within each system. Principal component analysis showed that the 22 characters could be consolidated for the 6 principal components and the accumulative contribution ratio of cultivars was 88.323%, while the accumulative contribution ratio of germplasm resources was 70.224%. Integrated cluster analysis and principal component analysis with practical applications, the author suggested that the classification of Chaenomeles cultivars through the fruit featur should be firstly based on the cultivar sources (systematics of wild species) using fruit type index and seed form as the important index. Then, the fruit shape could be the second criterion for the classification of Chaenomeles cultivars, and the fruit edges as the third criterion. The content of chlorogenic acid, oleanolic acid, ursolic acid and the flavonoids in 74 germplasm resources were determined. It result that the content of chlorogenic acid in Chaenomeles Sinensis (Thouin) Koehne has not been detected. Oleanolic acid, ursolic acid and the flavonoids content were respectively 0.106-0.108 mg·g-1, 0.694-0.840 mg·g-1, 16.135-28.182 mg·g-1 in Chaenomeles Sinensis (Thouin) Koehne. The content of chlorogenic acid, oleanolic acid, ursolic acid and the flavonoids were 0.117-1.694 mg·g-1, 0.441-0.911 mg·g-1, 0.366-0.487 mg·g-1, 16.424-19.804 mg·g-1 in Chaenomeles japonica (Thunb.) Lind l.. It was 0.096-2.746 mg·g-1, 0.360-1.836 mg·g-1, 0.110-1.604 mg·g-1, 6.661-40.839 mg·g-1 in Chaenomeles speciosa (Sweet) Nakai. And the content in Chaenomeles thayensis (Hemsl.) Schneid. was 0.297-4.017 mg·g-1, 0.311-1.520 mg·g-1, 0.031-1.345 mg/, 8.428-39.517 mg·g-1.Based on the morphological classification, we toke HPLC fingerprint study, built the HPLC fingerprint on genera of Chaenomeles, authenticated the HPLC fingerprint identification of 90 Chaenomeles germplasm resources, discussed clusterring analysis on he HPLC fingerprint.Through the combined studies of Chaenomeles between morphology and composition, We built the Chaenomeles germplasm resources database, improved Chaenomeles classification system, provides Chaenomeles elesidentification, quality evaluation and quality standard theory basis.Separate management on Medicinal Chaenomeles and edible Chaenomeles can ease the classification and meet the urgent need, basically solve the theoretical problems on Chaenomeles resources development.
