The sterility of dairy cow is one of the most serious problems that affect dairy industry in the world. Early diagnosis is the key point to avoid the sterility. The rectal palpation has been used for a long time, but its accuracy is questionable and is even no use for some ovary or uterus diseases. B-mode, real-time, linear-array ultrasonography with the speedy, intuitionistic, accurate and harmless characteristics, is regarded as a revolutionary research tool in cattle reproduction field. B-mode ultrasound scanner was used to imaging the ovaries and uterus of 37 infertile cows via rectum in this experiment. The ultrasonic morphologic characteristics of ovaries and uterus changes were summarized, and the relationships between sterility and ultrasonic morphologic changes of the ovaries and uterus were analyzed. All of the 37 cases were classified according their ultrasound changes and clinical symptoms. Ovarian pathological changes mainly included COD, persistent corpus luteum, inactive ovaries, ovarian atrophy, ovary infantilism, ovaritis, and uterus pathologic changes mainly included endometritis, uterus infantilism, uterine tumours, pyometra, cysts of the cervix, metritis etc. In all these pathological changes, endometritis and inactive ovaries respectively accounted for 68.4% and 69.5%. We also discovered that cows with endometritis, pyometra and other uterus diseases often had ovarian pathological changes, such as COD, persistent corpus luteum and ovaritis. With the results of that B-mode ultrasonography can provide real, trusty and sensitive gist of ovarian and uterus morphologic changes, we concluded that B-mode ultrasonography could apply to diagnose sterility in dairy cows.
