The possibility of the early selection is reported by means of the analysis of genetic variation and correlation of the seedling important traits of the Populus deltoids clones.Based on the research,this paper studies the the clonal selection by analysis of the investigated data in 8 year and 12 year of the Populus deltoids clones.The main results are highlighted as follows:1, According of analysis of variance of important traits of the seedling stage clones,the results are shown that mere are abundant variations between the different Populus deltoids clones;and the analysis of correlation shown that there are strong or moderate strong correlation within or between the seedling important traits and the mature growth traits.The results are also shown that the correlations are varied with the traits studied.2, The results of the analysis of genetic variation and correlation of the growth traits of the seedling and mature stage are shown that, there are abundant variations between the different Populus deltoids clones and are little influenced by the environments,and the juvenile-mature correlations between the traits of Populus deltoids clones are significantly or very significantly obvious.It concludes that early selection in low-intensity is possible in seedling stage because of the high correlation between the traits of Populus deltoids clones.3, The fifth age is better for selection than other tree ages after juvenile-mature correlation analysis of growth and density traits.Four principal components and two principal components are extracted from eleven seedling traits of LST clones and six traits by principle component analysis respectively,and tested clones are divided into three and four groups using cluster analysis.4, The first three principal components extracted from six traits of seedling stage clones are used in the aggregate selection index method,an index equation can be got:1=1.95974X1+1.94423X2-0.800185X3Based on the equation and the ratio is ten percents ,four clones are selected.The effect of selection can be tested by the value of the h12, ΔH, Δa.The value of h12, ΔH are 0.630194, 12.1489,the value of Δa is 1.28263, 1.05162, 1.02226 respectively.
