Prawn is one of the most important commercial species along the southeast coast of China. The quality of the prawn has become one of the most important factors in the development of Commercial Penaeid Shrimp Farming when the resources of wild prawns were limited. It has an important theoretic meaning and an economical meaning to study the genetic breeding and analysis of the prawn along the Chinese coast. In this study, the use of ionizing radiation for inducing mutations by 60Co-γrays has been first applied in the genetic breeding of prawns. We hope to find some new prawn breeds which have excellent characters through the observation and selection for the progeny (M1) of the mutation-induced prawns Fenneropenaeus penicillatus and Marsupenaeus japonicus. We can discuss the effect of the induced mutations from the development of M1, the analysis of genetic backgrounds of M1 and so on.First of all, we make a record of M1 about the egg numbers, hatch rate, survival rate and the life performance of the parental prawns, and then we can make a decision in radiation-induced doses to ensure the adaptable range of the radiation-induced breeding of the prawns in our study. The range of the breeding in prawn Fenneropenaeus penicillatus turns out to be the middle of 1Gy and 10Gy, and the range of Marsupenaeus japonicus is 0.5Gy -15Gy. Secondly, we analyze the experimental data of hatch rate, survival rate, abnormality rate, growth and weight of M1 to see the biological difference between the normal progeny and the mutation-induced progeny. We also observe the development of embryo of M1 with microscope which shows some changes in the embryo. Finally, we apply the technology of RAPD and AFLP to analyze the genetic diversity in both nauplii and adults of M1. DNA fingerprint maps of the mutation-induced progeny which have been irradiated by different doses with...
