Ancient and famous trees in Nanjing was investigated in this paper .Rejuvenation techniques of ginkgo(Ginkgo biloba Linn)and cedar (Cedrus deodara(Roxb.)Loud)whose health condition are very serious were studied. The main results were as follows:1.There are 364 species trees in Nanjing. They belong to 66 familia diseases and 178 genus. In this investigation, 517 ancient and famous trees on record were found . Besides, three other trees were died: two gingkgo trees in Baixia borough and one holly tree in Qixia borough. Among all the ancient and famous trees in Nanjing, tricuspid cudarania only exists one, which locate in Qixia mountain. It is so rare that we must strengthen protection.2. Among the 589 ancient and famous trees which were notificated in the first time, 308 trees were weak, while15 trees were dying. Weak trees account for more than a half. 17 kinds of main plant diseases and 27 kinds of the main insect pests were found in the investigation. The new records found in the investigation were as follows: diseases and insect pests on wistaria in Music Platform of Dr. Sun Yat-sen' s Mausoleum,disease gali of basswood and buerger maple in QiXia borough,phytophthora root rot on cerdar in Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum and the ricania sublimbata Gacodi in common crapemyrtle. We had taken action and most of them had been controlled.3. In order to study the methods of determining health condition of ancient and famous trees, we tested the protective enzyme activity in the different age of gingkgo. Results indicated that following the trees'age increasing, catalase (CAT) activity decreased in certainty times, peroxidase(POD) activities decreased but superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity increased. Most of the trees'ture age is different with their physiological age. Using protective enzyme activity as a standard to judge the trees healthiness is feasible.4. In order to study on their rejuvenation technologies, the effects of NO and Spermine on gingkgo and cerdar were first studied. Results indicated that after chemical treatments the content of chlorophyll increased step by step with medicaments levels, and the biomass of cerdar was increased obviously. On the whole, treatment with NO had greater effect on content of chlorophyll and protective enzyme activity of trees than Spermine. The time of holding effect of the two treatments is about one month ,later application of which on ginkgo,cedar and taiwan juniper had certain rejuvenation effects.
