The ancient and famous trees are "old god of longevity", which are survived by a long period of severe tests and living competitions. The specific plant resource is an indispensable part in the aspect of city construction. It will takes on positive significance of realism and instruction in the area of the plan of green patches system of Changsha City, the construction of ecological garden city, building the harmonious living surroundings and the tour development of historic and cultural city, if the plant resource can be correctly used.The third general investigation and filing work of ancient and famous trees were accomplished on Oct.2006. There are 1265 old and rare trees, which are over 100 years, in Changsha City, they are under protection of our nation. And there are 1174 trees and 91 trees in the five districts of Changsha City and eleven counties and towns respectively. They belong to 34 familia,54 genus and 69 species. Papilionaceae has the largest amount in genus, Cinnamomum camphora occupy the largest areas in Changsha City, its counties and towns nearby. The majority of ancient and famous trees always stand around the houses and they function as wind break and soil fixation. Changsha City has the large number of late generation resources of ancient and famous trees. The number of third-class trees dominates 95%among the sum total, however they grow commonly or some even grow bad. They have to face the problem of decline and death because of the decline of wood itself, the change of surroundings and the impact of human behaviors. Therefore, how to preserve the ancient and famous trees according to the individual local conditions becomes an urgent problem that we need to deal with it first.Firstly, the Changsha government should enact a proper and integrated rule of law, file it and put up the name plate on it, only in this way can we preserve the ancient and famous trees legally. At the same time, the government should pay much more attention to relevant scientific research construction and devote more money to scientific research expenditure. Also, we can make full use of ancient and famous trees, which is not recyclable resource, to plump up the money bag as the maintenance costs. We should reinforce the consciousness of preserving trees and make people aware of it. In the aspect of rejuvenation and maintaining them, improving soil condition, filling up the hole of tree, support the tilting tree body are the most three effective methods. Moreover, we should consider the protection and beauty when we use the measures above, that is, in the prerequisite of protecting the ancient and famous trees, we can take advantage of current condition to build a landscape of old trees and beautify the city. In a word, we must advocate the historic and cultural, biological, ecological and esthetical value of ancient and famous trees.
