Prunus avium L. is a good bussiness with high nutrition and develops very fast nearly in few years. But cherry is intolerant to waterlogging in production. Intolerance to waterlogging has become one of those important factors which restrict the development of sweet cherry. The key solution to intolerance to waterlogging is to find a better rootstock. Meizao/Dongbeishanyingtao and Meizao/Mahaleb in this study were used as experiment materials, they are often used in production and their tolerances are different to waterlogging. We wanted to find the capable causes that make their tolerances different by comparing them under waterlogging. So we could offer some advices to choose rootstock better. This study was on going from August 7th,2006 to August 12th in root laboratory of Shandong Agricultural University. The key study results as follows:1. The leaves photosynthetic characters of Meizao/Dongbeishanyingtao decreased much more under waterlogging. Its net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate and stomatal conductance decreased much more than Meizao/Mahaleb. Meizao/Dongbeishanyingtao leaves soluble sugar and proline accumulated fewer than Meizao/Mahaleb but MDA increased obviously.2. The respiratory indensities of growing roots and brown lignified roots of Meizao/Dongbeishanyingtao decreased much more than Meizao/Mahaleb over waterlogging. The results showed that the PDC and LDH activities increased at first and then decreased in both kinds of roots, so the ADH activity in growing roots did, but the ADH activity in brown lignified roots increased. These enzyme activities in growing roots changed much more than those in brown lignified roots. The ADH and LDH activities in both Meizao/Dongbeishanyingtao roots increased much more than that of Meizao/Mahaleb roots, but PDC reversed.3. The contents of acetaldehyde and ethanol increased in both brown lignified roots, at last the acetaldehyde content in brown lignified roots of Meizao/Dongbeishanyingtao was lower than Meizao/Mahaleb, but the ethanol content reversed. The lactate and succinate contents in both rootstock brown lignified roots increased at first and then decreased, but Meizao/Dongbeishanyingtao reached the maximum earlier and accumulated much more than Meizao/Mahaleb. Their alanine contents increased and Meizao/Mahaleb increased much more. Their proline contents increased at first and then decreased ,but Meizao/ Mahaleb reached the maximum later and its content was much higher.4. The soluble sugar of Meizao/Dongbeishanyingtao decreased much more. But the starch decreased much faster after reaching the maximum. Meizao/Dongbeishanyingtao celluar pH reduced obviously. MDA content and relative conductance increased much more.
