The research was carried out at Duoying farm of Sichuan Agriculture University during the year 2006. The experiment materials was a new forage named YuCao 1, which was bred by distant hybridization between maize and teosintes. The research includes three experiments:(1) Effects of plant density on YuCao 1.(2) Effects of Stubble Height and Clipped Grass Length on YuCao 1.(3) Effects of Nitrogen Concentration and Harvest Interval on YuCao 1. The main results were as follows:1. The plant density experiment results indicate that, the total fresh yield of treatment D3(52500plant·hm-2) was maximum, and there was no significant difference between the treatment D3 and D2(45000plant·hm-2), and they were significantly higher than treatment D1(37500plant·hm-2). And there was no significant difference of dry yield between the plant density treatment. The CP contentN CP yield and RFV of treatment D1 was maximum, and the next order was treatment D2, treatment D3 was minimum. The study indicate that when the plant density was 45000plant·hm-2, the YuCao 1 could harvest higher forage yield and better quality.2. A field plot experiment was conducted to study the effects of stubble height and clipped grass length on yield and forage quality of YuCao 1. The result indicated that there was no significant difference between the treatment of 25cm stubble and treatment L15 on total fresh, dry yield,RFV and CP concentration and production, and was significantly higher than the treatment of 5cm stubble. The treatment C220(clipping when grass length was 220cm) was higher in fresh, dry yield,CP production and NDF content and lower in RFV and CP content when compared with treatment CK(clipping when grass length was 190cm). The fresh, dry forage yield and CP production of treatment C160(clipping when grass length was 160cm) was significantly lower than treatment C190, but was higher in CP concentration and RFV. Considering forage yield and quality in different clipping mode, the study indicate that for fresh feeding, stubble height was 25 cm and grass length was 190cm; for silage, stubble height was 15cm and grass length was 220cm.3. The change of forage production and forage quality in 3 harvests of YuCao 1 was studied by plot design(four nitrogen concentration levels and three harvest interval levels). The results show that forage yield, quality of YuCao 1 has been significantly effected by nitrogen concentration and harvest intervals, but the effect on forage yield and quality of their interaction was not significant. The total fresh and dry forage yield, forage quality,CP content,CP yield and RFV of YuCao 1 was lowest for non-nitrogen treatment. Non-nitrogen treatment was lower than the treatment whose nitrogen concentration was 2.2g/plant on above index. While the treatment whose nitrogen concentration was 2.2g/plant was lower than the treatment whose nitrogen concentration was 3.8g/plant and 5.4g/plant on above index. There was no significant difference between the latter two treatment on above index. The treatment which harvest interval was 65d was highest on the total fresh yield, dry yield,NDF content and CP yield, and was significantly higher than the treatment which the harvest interval was 55d and 45d on above index, but the CP content and RFV was significantly lower than the treatment whose harvest interval was 45d. The study indicated that the treatment whose nitrogen concentration was3.8g/plant and the treatment whose harvest interval was 45d was fit forfresh feeding, and the harvest interval was 65d was fit for silage. To sum up, the suitable cultivation style of YuCao 1 was: plant density was 45000plant·hm-2, nitrogen concentration was 3.8g/plant. The harvest style that harvest when grasslength was 190cm, stubble height was 25cm and harvest interval was 45d was fit for fresh feeding; and the harvest style that harvested when grasslength was 220cm, stubble height was 15cm and harvest interval was 65d was fit for silage.
