Now, our industry of agricultural information has several problems. Agriculturalinformation resources are separate and out-of-order, the descriptions of informationare different, and the information is difficult to share and reuse. This research isestablished in existing theories and technologies of semantic web, and studied thesemantic knowledge expression of rice domain, for deep understanding the riceinformation resources with computers. Then it will offer some groundwork for shareand reuse of rice domain knowledge, and rice semantic web in future. The main research has related to the second layer(XML+NS+xmlschema) andthe third layer(RDF+rdfschema) of Tim Berners-Lee's Semantic Web Architecture, and has little related to the fourth layer (Ontology vocabulary). The research has usedsome relative technologies of semantic web. XML, XML Schema are used fordescribing knowledge of rice domain, and RDF(S), OWL for designing the ontologymodel of rice domain knowledge.Because the rice domain knowledge has characters of time, space andmultidimensionality, and compared several knowledge expression methods, thenchose the framework as the basic expression method. In view of the complexity anduniversality in rice domain knowledge, the main research is the semantic expressionof rice diseases and pests. The content and structure of knowledge in rice diseases and pests are expressedby XML and XML Schema, the designing tool is Altova XMLSpy(?)2006. Thisprocess has offered semantic base for knowledge expression in rice diseases and pests. Then the knowledge ontology model which has been designed with Protégé-3.2 hascarried out the semantic knowledge expression in rice diseases and pests. At last, with the inference mechanism of Protégé-3.2's own, the model has been tested that it hassome function of semantic inference.
