Sichuan is one of the most important geographic ranges of Galliformes in China. A study was conducted to research the distribution and conservation of Galliformes in Sichuan. The data are based on the results of 58 provincial field surveys in the recent decade, reports and literatures collected from 1929 to 2005 by both Chinese and foreign researchers and the samples of three museums in Sichuan. The results show that: 1) 25 species of Galliformes were recorded, among them 16 species are nationally protected birds, and 7 species are endemic in China. 2) According to the analysis of the richness of Galliformes by GIS, Pingwu,Songpan,Nanping,Mianzhu,Yele,Kangding,Pingchuan and Baoxing are the richest counties in Galliformes in Sichuan; Pingwu,Songpan,Nanping,Yele,Kangding,Pingchuan and Baoxing are the richest counties in protected Galliformes in Sichuan. 3) The main threats against Galliformes in Huoxihe drainage area are fragmentation of habitats and poaching. There are several protection ways related with Galliformes there, such as two nature reserves, forest protection project and couples of Non- governmental protection projects. 4) The main threats against Galliformes in Sichuan are the fragmentation of habitats and poaching. The Galliformes are protected there by nature reserves, protecting forests, Non-governmental protection projects, and public awareness education. In order to protect Galliformes effectively, we must strengthen the protection of habitats, stop poaching through better enforcement, cooperation with international organizations, protect Galliformes through tradition culture and religion and to strengthen the public awareness education 5) There are 86 countries (of 159 in total) which are short of records of Galliformes. These countries need more field work on inventory, abundance and distribution of Galliformes.
