Medicago varia Martin. cv. Caoyuan No.3 is a perennial herbage, it is known as legumes, Lucerne genus. It has been cultivated by Inner Mongolia Agricultural University. It has been verified by national verification committee of herbage species in 2002, and registered as new species. The experiment site was located in Ordos Inner Mongolia; it used the second years yield. The experiment reserched that the effects of planting density on the agronomic traits and performance of Medicago varia Martin. cv. Caoyuan No.3 through the different treatments of seed rate and row spacing, and seting up 12 kinds of different planting density.Through two-year systematic research to Field densities, the regularity of planting density of Medicago varia Martin. cv. Caoyuan No.3 have been grasped in Ordos in Inner Mongolia. It provided theoretical base and practical conduct for local cultivate industry of Medicago varia Martin. cv. Caoyuan No.3.The main results of the experiment are:Flowered early and plants were low, branches were few on flat areas under the Low-density planting condition. Low-density planting's the base of stem diameter, individual amount of branch, the amount of inflorescences per branch, the amount of pods per inflorescence, the amount of mature seed per pod, 1000-seed weight were larger than the high-density planting's. When the density increased, the LAI increased too. When the density increased, the pass though light ratio decreased. Leaves area at pod stage was less than it at initiation flower stage and full-blown stage. No significant difference was fled on leaf area between all treatments.Although the increase in the density of increase flat area on the number of reproductive sticks, but the number of the second grade valid branches decrease (P <0.05), the rate of losing pod increase (P <0.01), the number of plant middle and lower pod ratio decreased (P <0.01 ), Lead to lower seed productionIn the experiment of different planting density treatments, there was the highest yield of dry herbage with the combination of row spacing 60cm and seed rate 1.0g/m. there was the highest yield of seed yield with the combination of row spacing 80cm and seed rate 0.5g/m.
