Insect is an important component of biological resources and it is a significant factor of the Earth's biosphere's food chain. Therefore, it is fundamental to the maintenance of ecology balance and biodiversity. In recent years, the fungi and plant resources in Zijin Mountain National Forest Park have been repeatedly investigated, but there is not a systematic investigation of insect fauna. The species, amount and distribution of the insects remain to be ambiguous as well. Preliminary investigation on the insects background provided a scientific basis for further studying on the insects,making control objects and compiling the catalogue of insects from Zijin Mountain. And it is vital for the protection and development of biological resources in Zijin Mountain National Forest Park of Nanjing.The objectives of this paper were to study the insect fauna in Zijin Mountain. A detailed investigation and analysis had been carried out on the insect species composition and the insect fauna. On this basis, the Zijin Mountain Management Information System (ZJMIS) was developed with the help of Microsoft SQL Server as database management system and Delphi6.0 as application development language. Results of the research are as follows:1. The insect species composition in Zijin MountainVarious methods like route investigation and light trap had been carried out regularly from April, 2005 to October, 2007, for the sake of a thorough investigation on the insect fauna in Zijin Mountain Forest Park. Over 20,000 samples of insects had been collected in the survey. According to the analysis of these samples, the list of Zijin Mountain insects was reported for the first time in this paper. 727 species were identified, which were from 534 Genus in 127 families in 15 orders. And among these, there were 165 species that were found to be the new records in Jiangsu Province.2. Characteristics of the insect species composition in Zijin MountainThrough this survey, it can be concluded that the insect species in Zijin Mountain were abundant. Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Homoptera, Hemiptera and Hymenoptera were the dominant orders. Among these, there were 33 families in Lepidoptera, which accounted for 26.1% of the total families; 23 families in Coleoptera, which accounted for 18.3% of the total families; 18 families in Homoptera, which accounted for 14.3% of the total families; 11 families in Hemiptera, which accounted for 8.7% of the total families; 10 families in Hymenoptera, which accounted for 7.9% of the total families.The families which included more than 10 species were Noctuidae(113),Pyralidae(43), Geometridae (39), Cerambycidae (31), Nymphalidae (29), Sphingidae (26),Lycaenidae(27),Notodontidae(17),Satyridae(17),Hesperiidae(17), Pentatomidae (15), Lymantriidae (14), Papilionidae (14),Pieridae (12), Coccinellidae (10).These 15 families were the dominant groups in Zijin Mountain.3. The element of insect fauna in Zijin MountainThe analysis of the insect fauna composition indicated that the numbers of widely distributive species, Oriental species and Palearctic species were 398, 207 and 122, respectively. And the percentages of widely distributive species, Oriental species and Palearctic species were 54.7%, 28.6% and 16.7% respectively. According to this investigation, it can be concluded that the main element of the fauna in the region is widely distributive area. And it can be obviously described that the Oriental and the Palearctic permeate each other. This situation is consistent with the geography of Zijin Mountain.4. The development of the Zijin Mountain Management Information SystemThe Zijin Mountain Management Information System (ZJMIS) was developed on the premise that information had been accumulated through the above-mentioned investigation. Firstly, through the analysis of the demand, the function, architecture and software development platform of the system were confirmed. Then the design process, including function module division and database design were elaborated in the paper.This system applies to C/S mode, Delphi6.0 as application development tool and Microsoft SQL Server as database management system. It provides the users with such functions as logging in, query, adding, modification, deleting, etc. ZJMIS can improve the management of insects'information and therefore, can enable the interaction among human, computer and the data, which would make it possible for the administrator to manage all the insects'information via the system.
