The experiment was conducted to study the effects of chlorine on performance and body acid-base balance in growing ducks. Three hundred Jin-Ding ducks, with an average weight of (0.50±0.40)kg, were used and randomly allotted into five treatments with ten replications of six ducks. The five treatments diets were groupⅠcontained chlorine 0.06%, groupⅡcontained chlorine 0.12%, groupⅢcontained chlorine 0.18%, groupⅣcontained chlorine 0.30%, and groupⅤcontained 0.60% chlorine, respectively. The period of experiment was six weeks. The results of feeding experiment showed as the follows:Performance was significantly reduced for ducks fed diets containing chlorine 0.06% (P<0.05). There was no significant effect on performance among the groups of 0.12%~0.60% chlorine (P>0.05), but ADG,FW,FCR,ducks fed diet containing 0.12% chlorine, were better than other groups. There was no significant effect on ADFI(P>0.05). It is concluded that duck will make the optimal performance when the diet contained 0.12% chlorine, low level(0.06%) or high level chlorine(0.30%~0.60%) would consume metabolism for regulating acid-base balance and reduce performance. The results of blood sampling experiment showed as the follows:(1)The differences of serum Cl-,OSM,AG (anion gap) between treatments were significant (P<0.05), and serum Na+ was extremely significant (P<0.01), and the indices increased significantly as the levels of chlorine increased (P<0.05). Blood pH and plasma HCO3- were not significantly decrease with chlorine levels increased (P>0.05),but they decreased as chlorine increased, and the function of them on dietary chlorine to be sigmoidal.(2)The level of chlorine had no significant effect on CK,GOT,GPT(P>0.05),and they changed no rules. There were significant effect on ALP,LDH(P<0.05). ALP decreased and LDH increased at first and subsequently decreased as chlorine increased.(3)The effects of chlorine had significant effect on TP,ALB,G:B(P<0.05),and no significant effect on GLB(P>0.05). TP,ALB,GLB changed no rules.(4)There were no significant effects on BUN, CREA, URIC, GLU (P>0.05). BUN, URIC, GLU were decreased at first and subsequently increased, but CREA was reversely.(5)The effects of chlorine had no significant effect on INS, Cort, T3, T4 (P>0.05). They were increased at first and subsequently decreased as the levels of chlorine increased. (6)The effects of chlorine had significant effect on T-AOC(P<0.05), no significant effect on MDA, T-SOD (P>0.05). T-AOC and T-SOD were increased at first and subsequently decreased. But MDA was decreased at first and subsequently increased.
